That scene in the kitchen is so good - Cromwell at home with his guard down (without his knife!), casually changing the fortunes of a kitchen boy, asking after the gossip on the street, and letting Thurston boss him around even when he disagrees as to when to kill the eels.
Yes, it seems the kitchen and being around Thurston there, is the only place he has in a way. Where this having to be 100% alert all the time, thinking ahead, interpreting people and their motives and so on can (almost) put on hold for a while. It must be so, so exhausting to be Cromwell...
