Yes it was, I don't know a lot about them, but would like to. Her aunt Margarethe who held the post before her was very close to her father Emperor Maximilian and Maria was very close to her brother Charles. So maybe both Emperor knew they could trust them and knew they were able to do this. As widows they were probably a safer option than others who might develop too much aambition. Probably both were also much more acceptable to the Estates and cities in the Netherlands.
Wonderful stuff- thank you. I LOVE the whimsy that Cromwell and Chapuys might have become friends in their retirement- this rings true for me and I find their relationship definitely one of the more intriguing ones on a personal level for Crumb..also: 200 oranges!! 🍊 🍊🍊🍊
